Nottingham Forest FA Cup Winners
Putting History Right 2012 - acrylic on canvas 48" x 30"
In 1898 Nottingham Forest played local rivals Derby County and won the FA Cup for the first time, they were then told by the photographer to abandon their traditional red shirts and put on Derbys white shirts as this would make for a better contrast in the black and white photo.......something that no team would even contemplate doing today!
I decided to take this image and put history right!....

Wanting to paint footballers in action required sitting in the stands taking photographs to work from, simple i thought!.....i knew what sort of shots i wanted and sports photographers make it look easy, but it isnt .....
the picture you want is gone in a flash and you've missed it .......in the end i needed to take about 250 shots just to find only a handful that fitted with the idea i had for this three piece painting.....

In the early 1920's Godfrey Phillips Tobbaco Co. produced the first comprehensive photographic record of the top footballers/teams of their day and became known as "The Pinnace Collection".... to bring these old faces back to life in colour and big on a canvas was something too good to resist....and of course recreate that garibaldi red.
